A week in Vienna for 12 students interested in international relations: briefings, a visit to the UN's Vienna headquarters and a three-day negotiation simulation on nuclear safety.

Vienna is one of the four main seats of the United Nations and home to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the OSCE. For one week in March 2027, twelve students who want to work in diplomacy, international law or journalism spend their days in the city where much of that work happens.

The week opens with a guided visitor tour of the Vienna International Centre and an afternoon on how multilateral negotiations actually run: who speaks, who drafts, and why the text matters more than the speeches.

The core of the week is a three-day simulation. Each student represents a country in negotiations over a fictional nuclear safety agreement, with real briefing papers, a chair, deadlines and a final vote. A former diplomat and a Passage Journal editor run the simulation and give each student written feedback at the end.

Evenings are free for Vienna: standing places at the State Opera are some of the cheapest opera tickets in Europe, and the Ringstrasse is the best free history lesson in Europe.

Flights, accommodation, meals, transport, tickets and insurance are covered. Applications close on 17 January 2027. A short written task (500 words, set in the application statement below) is the main part of selection.
